A call to the Cody Museum/Winchester records verified that this rifle was received in the warehouse in 1887 as a .45-70, 30” #3 oct. rifle. Definitely one of the more difficult and desirable calibers to locate in the single shot Highwall line, this one also has a surprisingly EXCELLENT BRIGHT BORE that is not quite perfect, but not far off either- I haven’t brushed it or done more than knock the dust out of it with a patch, cleaning with J-B bore paste might just make it near perfect- receiver is a nice uncleaned mottled gray/brown, barrel blue very aged and mostly mixed brown patina, fine markings, tight action, exc screws and fine+ wood with tight wood to metal fit and ebony wedge inlay intact, buckhorn rear sight with small Rocky Mountain blade front sight, these big early frontier used single shots in .45-70 are especially hard to fine these days.
