Description:
Serial #42382, 12 ga. (2 3/4" chamber) Full & Full Chokes, 30" barrels with excellent, bright bores. This is a handsome gun that retains nearly all of the original intricate twist pattern that has dulled slightly over time but is still perfectly clear and visible without any pits or flaws. The frame is predominantly a bright gray patina with limited, but attractive, decorative engraving along the borders and a small dog's head vignette on the floorplate which retains some traces of original bright blue. Additionally, there is a large engraved "EMPEROR" emblazoned across the top of the frame just ahead of the top lever, which is still slightly right of center. The black-tipped checkered walnut forend and straight-grip buttstock are both in fine shape with some minor handling marks and some flattening of the points marring the excellent re-applied varnish. The buttstock has cast-off for right-handed shooters and has a 14 3/8" length of pull to a grooved hard rubber buttplate. The drops measure 1 1/2" and 2 1/8" respectively. This very gun is pictured on pages 127 and 128 of "The Greener Story" by Graham Greener, where the gun is described as a "prototype" example (most likely due to the single trigger mechanism). According to the book, approximately 40 or 50 Emperor models were actually produced and a 2013 dated letter from Mr. Greener not only reaffirms that, but actually names the various craftsmen who built the gun, relates that this particular gun was built to Harry Greener's specifications, and gives the actual production time (June 22, 1894 – October 10, 1894). In effect, all Emperor models were prototypes that led eventually to the Empire Model guns and this example, which has an unusual original single select trigger mechanism, is a fantastic published and lettered gun. It would make an exceptional addition to any collection of fine English doubles or sporting guns. {Ref. "The Greener Story" by Graham Greener; 2000} Antique
