Description:

CIVIL WAR Antique 1860 Light Cavalry Saber by ROBY

Civil War Dated “1865” Made by Christopher Roby

Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1860 Pattern Light Cavalry Saber, made in 1865 by C. Roby for the American Civil War effort in W. Chelmsford, Massachusetts. The 1860 was a lighter and nimbler successor to the 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber. The M1860 went on to be used by cavalry during the Indian Wars and even in the Spanish-American War. The Ames Mfg. Company alone produced 200,000 of these swords, with other contractors fulfilling several tens of thousands each.

Christopher Roby maintained a steady business making items like scythes and other farm implements until the embargo on the South during the American Civil War caused him to seek other product lines to make ends meet. In 1862 he began contracting with the U.S. to provide several different models of sword. His wartime production of swords numbered 48,410 compared to hundreds of thousands produced by companies like Ames.

Roby was even commissioned on September 5, 1864 to raise up his own local cavalry, of which he was elected Captain, to be protectors against Confederate raids in northern Massachusetts. Unfortunately, the company was bankrupt by 1867, a mere 2 years after the end of the war.

This saber is marked “U.S./1865/A.G.M.” These last are initials for the government inspector. The other side of the ricasso reads “C. ROBY/W. CHELMSFORD/MASS”.

The overall condition is near fine. The brass is dark with patina. The blade is bright and very fine. The markings are clear and legible. The original leather and wire wrap are complete and in good shape. The iron scabbard is very dark. Here is a very nice Civil War Saber!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
