Although often referred to as conversions, these guns were actually produced at the Colt factory as cartridge revolvers. They were assembled from new un-numbered Model 1851 Colt Navy percussion parts remaining in the factory inventory, and newly fabricated conversion parts. They were chambered for both the .38 Rimfire and the .38 Centerfire cartridges. A total of approximately 3,800 were produced and this is one of the earliest ones, serial number 372. It is chambered for the rimfire cartridge, and remains in remarkably good original condition. At least 70% of the factory bright blue and color case hardened finish remains and the bore is excellent. These guns made on the Richards-Mason patent and the Navy size frame would soon become the basis for the famouns Colt 1873 Peacemaker. A nice example of a very historically significant gun.
