Description:
We purchased this Colt 1911A1 from the family of the soldier that carried it all across Europe from 1944 to 1945.  His name was William Divine and he was with the 411th AAA Gun Battalion that landed on D-Day +3 -June 9th, 1944 at Le Grand Chemin, France.  There is a map that came with the rig that shows the movements of the 411th across France, Belgium, and Germany, ending up in Wellersdorf Germany on May 3rd, 1945.  There are also two pictures included of William Divine, along with a U.S. U.S.M.C. 1911 shoulder holster made by Boyt dated 1945 (likely acquired in Europe after he landed).  We were told that Corporal Divine was a member of mobile AA gun halftrack (there is a drawing of one on the map included), and that is what he was in for the duration of his time in the European theater.  The Colt is in excellent condition overall.  The original parkerized finish is 95%, with the majority of the wear being high edge wear from being holstered.  The darker hardened areas of the pistol show beautifully at the front quarter of the pistol and the around the slide stop notch.  The bore is in good overall condition with nice rifling but does show some frosting throughout.  The original checkered brown plastic grips are in excellent condition and free from cracks or repairs.  The pictures show some areas on the right grip panel that look marred but it is actually dried oil/grease/leather bits down in the grooves from the holster strap that can be cleaned off.  As you can see in the pictures, it appears that at some point after WW2 Mr. Divine possibly changed the rear sight to an adjustable type that required a tapped hole behind the sight dovetail.  Apparently he or someone in his family changed it back to the original fixed sight and put a plug screw in the hole.  Thankfully, it is not too noticeable and was professionally done.  From either side of the Colt it is not visible, only from the top.  Everything works 100% on this Colt 1911A1 just like the day it left the factory, and it comes with a proper magazine which is marked "S" on the top of the lip and "C-S" on the bottom lip of the floorplate.  So many of these WW2 1911A1's have been separated from the families of the G.I.s that carried them without regard to keeping their history with them that it is quite rare to find one with this much information today.  It is quite special to have such an excellent condition pistol complete with the G.I.'s name, holster, pictures, and battalion map of his service in World War 2.
