Description:

SPENCER 1865 Carbine BURNSIDE Contract Civil War

Antique Saddle Ring Carbine Made in Providence, RI

Here we present an antique Spencer Model 1865 Carbine, made in 1865 by contract by the Burnside Rifle Company in Providence, Rhode Island. The Spencer was a very successful carbine that was desirable on Civil War battlefields due to its handy size, accuracy, and rate of fire. The magazine tube in the butt holds 7 shots and a captured Confederate soldier is quoted as saying that you “load in the morning and fire all day!” The inventor, Christian Spencer, had the unique opportunity to personally instruct President Abraham Lincoln as he test-fired the rifle, resulting in more military sales. After their service in the war, many were taken afield and into the Western Frontier.

This specimen is one of the Burnside Contract, making it scarcer than those made by the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company. Out of the 34,000 made by Burnside, over 30,000 were purchased by the U.S. government. Various parts have single letter sub-inspector initials. The barrel is 3-groove. The receiver is marked “MODEL 1865/SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE/PAT’D MARCH 6/MANUF’D AT PROV. R.I./BY BURNSIDE RIFLE CO.”

The overall condition is very good. The frame shows faint case colors. The barrel has a mixed patina, having been cleaned a bit in the past. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is very smooth and clean, having been lightly refinished. The bore is sharp and clean. The action is excellent. Here is a good-looking Spencer carbine!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 20 inches.

Caliber: .52 Spencer
