WWI C&R German/Turkish LOEWE Gewehr 88/05 Rifle
Used by the Ottomans During WORLD WAR II!
Here we present a German Commission Rifle Model 1888/05, made in 1890 by Ludwig Loewe & Company in Berlin, Germany. A highly advanced rifle when it was introduced, it was quickly made obsolete in the European arms race of the late 19th and early 20th Century. Mauser, who was furious with this rifle’s adoption, would soon dominate the market with his Model 98. When World War I saw Germany allied with the Ottoman Turks, the Germans provided the Turks these surplus rifles, which were then updated at the arsenal to accept the more modern spire point bullets, tighter barrel, rear sight marked in Farsi, and clip ejection port covered up.
This rifle is dated on the receiver “1890”, which is the year of manufacture. The bottom of the clip ejection port cover is dated “1914”, when it was at the arsenal. The receiver is also marked “LOEWE BERLIN” with a “Crown/S” mark. The left side of the receiver is marked “GEW 88” in Gothic letters. A series of proofs are on the right side of the receiver. German acceptance marks are located behind the trigger guard and on the right side of the butt stock. The rear of the butt plate is marked “10/A”. The rear barrel band is marked “83.R.E.1.70.” The forward barrel band is marked “59.R.6.79.” These are likely unit markings from German service. The bolt handle is marked with a crescent, the rear sight is in Farsi, and it appears that various parts were renumbered in Farsi.
The overall condition is very good. The original blue on the barrel shroud is about 50% with the balance having a dark patina. The numerous markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers on the barrel, receiver, screws, and magazine match while the barrel bands are mixed. The stock is solid and in good shape, with a solid period repair to the toe. The bore is excellent, with sharp rifling and bright surfaces. The action is excellent and strong. Here is a very nice historical rifle for your collection!
