Purdey & Sons, Audley House, South Audley Street, London, England: A Purdey Bar Action Sidelock Ejector 400 3" Nitro Ordered September 29, 1928 by Sir Shri Maharana Bhupal Singh Bahadur KCIE the ruler of the Indian princely state of Udaipur (or Mewar), It is with 25 1/2" Ejector Chopper Lump Whitworth Steel Barrels, The barrels with a rib extension third bite, Full rib with 1 standing & 1 folding rear sights, Sideclip action body, Bushed strikers, London Nitro proved at 47 Cordite with a 230 grain bullet, Double triggers, Engraved steel grip cap, Shadow line cheekpiece, 13 1/2" LOP (Lettered) over a 7/8" Silvers (Lettered) pad, Original weight of 8 lbs. (Lettered) , 90% coverage of Purdey's classic rose & scroll engraving done by either Warren, Woolman or Kell, The barrels retain 99% blue and have been very nicely reblacked, This piece has 10% case colors remaining with a very nice patina, The butt & forend are as solid as they were 89 years ago, The stock finish remains at 85%, The checkering is at 90%, The Gold oval in the stock line has "B. S." (Bhupal Singh), The bores are virtually like new; Brass, dies and bullets available. The whole is cased in the original brass cornered oak & leather trunk that remains in excellent condition, it has spare strikers, spare front sight, original cleaning gear, turnscrews, snap caps and original trade labels. This is a very nice 89-year-old Classic Purdey package that is excellent with bores like new. Bhupal Singh was a small man and the original length of pull was ordered accordingly. //////////////////////////////////// Bhupal Singh was born in 1884, a year before the accession of his father Fateh Singh to the throne of Mewar and Udaipur as Maharana. Maharana Bhupal Singh was crippled from his waist down at a relatively young age. After the independence and partition of British India in 1947, Singh was one of the first of the Indian princes to sign an Instrument of Accession to the new Dominion of India, and on April 18, 1948 he became Rajpramukh of Rajasthan, succeeding Sir Bhim Singh, The Maharaja of Kotah. One of Bhopal Singh's palaces was Jag Niwas, on an island in Lake Pichola, since used for the filming of several films, including a James Bond film.
