CUSTOMIZED 45-70 Antique SPRINGFIELD 1884 Trapdoor

U.S. Model 1884 Short Rifle in .45-70 GOVT

Here we present an antique Springfield U.S. Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle, made circa 1889 in Springfield Massachusetts for military service. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War in 1898. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. They were sturdy, simple rifles, with plenty of range and power.

One of the distinctive features of this model was the highly adjustable, long-range rear sight, called a Buffington rear sight. The front sight is a fine blade, making this sighting combination very effective at long distances. This model was also designed to handle the larger 45-70-500 cartridge, with a 500-grain bullet, versus the 45-70-405 of earlier models of the trapdoor. The lock is marked “Eagle/U.S./Springfield”. The left side of the barrel bears the “V/P/Eagle head” proof marks. This example has been completely polished and shortened to make a handier rifle with a 24-1/2 inch barrel. This promises to be a fantastic shooter with black powder loads.

The overall condition is very good as customized. The metal surfaces are polished bright. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is smooth. There is a split at the end of the stock at the muzzle end, but is stabilized by the barrel band behind it. The bore is bright and well-rifled. The action is excellent. A great old shooter!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 24-1/2 inches.
