Description:
Springfield Armory.  Model 1870 Sharps rifle. Cal 50-70 CF. 35 inch barrel
with a bright excellent three grove bore numbered to the frame. About 1300
of these altered rifles were produced at Springfield Armory as an
experiment into producing cartridge arms from Civil War "leftover"
percussion actions. A considerable amount of supplemental parts were
required to be produced by the armory, boosting the cost of the conversion
above practicality. The barrel and the bands are a bright gunmetal grey
with some scattered light oxidation staining and some minor handling
marks. The frame shows some nice mottled color case hardening.  The lever
shows strong case colors with the lower tang a mottled grey and brown. The
smooth walnut buttstock and forend rate very good with overall minor
dings and handling marks from the years, the forend showing a bit more
bruising.  The buttplate tang has a strong "US" marking. The lock is crisp
and mechanically tight.  Overall a very fine original example of  the first
type Springfield Armory-manufactured Model 1870 Sharps rifle. Very
accurate and RARE rifle. Serial # 0749.
