The official Army placed a contract for just 1000 of these very unusual 2 shot single barrel muskets in the period from 1863-1864. They were indeed issued to the Union Army and proved to be unreliable and dangerous. Many of those in service blew up. The balance were withdrawn and eventually taken home by the soldiers I guess.. There is one currently on display in the West Point Museum and another in the NRA Museum. Considering the small amount from the original contract, the few that survived the Civil War they are quite scarce. Add to that, there are a few already in collections that leaves very few, indeed. This one, while not pristine, is a real find for the serious U.S. military weapons collector. A short history of the Union Armies most unusual musket is found in Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms. All in all, this is most likely the smallest U.S. contract musket to actually see combat in the civil war. The NRA history indicates that the 16th Michigan Infantry used them at the battle of Peeble's Farm and was the only outfit that was issued them. They also say that the troops hated them due to their unreliability. We acquired this one from an estate where there were no survivors to give us its unique history. The condition of the gun is very good. While the gun was stored indoors, it sat in an attic for about 150 years. So most metal parts are covered with scattered surface pin pricks. The butt plate is indeed U.S. stamped. The barrel bands all have the proper "U" stamp. The stock is in super condition showing very little use. There are no chips splits or dings. There are two very visible "ADK" inspector's Cartouches on its left side. The double hammer single trigger lock system works perfectly.. It also comes with the original socket bayonet and sheath that was found stored with the gun. The leather belt loop has split from age, however the balance of it is fine. The bayonet and scabbard are in super condition as is shown in the pictures. Little or no pin pricks anywhere.. It is just an awesome package for the collector that prides himself for having a complete collection.......$3495.
