Tyler 20 Gauge SxS Shotgun OBSCURE AMERICAN HIGH GRADE DOUBLE General Specs: CA Tyler, 20 Gauge, 5lbs 13oz, Side by Side Serial Number: n/a I have been collecting fine American double guns for over 20 years and have come across some very unusual guns that are not well known yet are very well made. This gun is one of them and a Google search turns up nothing, and a search through the Double Gun Journal index books comes out blank as well. However, fine guns are determined by more than a name...fine guns are determined by fit and finish and the sum of the parts. The first oddity we find on this gun is that it seems to have borrowed from Westley Richards the top opening lever and locking system. The finishes on the gun seem to be all factory original, including the wood finish and checkering. The barrels are beautiful star damascus showing 99% pattern. The receiver is ornately engraved with clean cut scroll and detailed dogs and birds that you would see on a very fine American gun from the late 1800's. The wood is nicely figured, fiddleback laden walnut with a grain flow that is perfect for a fine shotgun. The elaborate, concise checkering has no straight lines, with all lines curving to the flow of the "ball" style pistol grip. The forend has a dark horn inlay at the tip and surrounding the escutcheon and forend latch. The forend latch itself is unique in that you lift it from its retaining slot and then rotate counter clockwise to release it from the forend lug...very cool! The action is tight as can be, and there is no wiggle of the barrels on the hinge pin. The gun seems to have been built as a gun for close quarters and close shots, as the barrels are 24" and with very little choke. Most will want to believe the barrels have been cut, but I do not believe that to be the case. There were plenty of 24" barreled guns built in those days as "brush guns" and the ends of the barrels touch at the muzzles. Even the trigger guard is nicely engraved with scroll and game scene. The gun is without flaw and would be a fabulous addition to anyone collecting and shooting early American shotguns. It is 5 3/4lbs. of Americana that is priced at a very affordable figure for a nicely engraved fine shotgun. Enjoy the photos, and if anyone can tell me about C.A. Tyler I would love to learn more about this fine little gun. Thanks for looking!
