Description:
Presented for you today is a Henry First Model .44 converted to center fire. It has a lever latch (possibly added during conversion). Carrying serial number 1301, this antique lever action rifle was built in 1863.

This Henry has a very nice shiny bore, showing some pitting in areas. The barrel shows a smooth finish and nice thin blue coming through. It has some aged and old pitting that has smoothed out over the years. Its rear sight appears to be a replacement as the age and wear doesn’t match the rest of the steel parts.

This Henry’s stock has been refinished at some point. Screws and plates all have serial numbers that match to the gun. The butt plate’s trap door holds an original Henry 4-piece cleaning rod.

The rifle’s receiver shows use over the years, and has a very nice mustard patina. It has dot engraved “J.W. Irwin” on left side plate. Included with the rifle is a copy of Application for Pension military papers for a John W. Irwin of Roy, New Mexico, who was a soldier discharged in 1864. These papers were included with the Henry rifle when it was purchased from a dealer about 25 years ago. We cannot verify that the rifle and paperwork are for the same person, but we believe a strong possibility exists.
