A H Fox Sterlingworth “Pin Gun”
12Ga. S/N# 60629 MFG date of 1912. 28” barrels 2 ¾” Chambers. Chokes: Right, Mod. Left, Full. Stock is a capped pistol grip with original Fox butt plate. (small repair at toe) Dimensions: are 1 5/8” DAC, X 2 ¾” DAH, X 14 1/16” LOP. Weight is 6# 12oz. This is a very high condition collectible Fox. Note the 50%+ vivid first generation Fox case colors. Also note the carbon blued trigger guard with double rolled edges, and the gracefully shaped triggers. Also note the raised cheek panels on the stock. None of these elegant features survived in later Sterlingworths. The later Sterlingworths often look roughshod, and crude compared to this early first run example. It has been said many times over the years that the Fox Sterlingworth represented the best value dollar for dollar in the US double gun trade ever!
For the novice “What’s a pin gun??” A pin gun is described as the scalloped or recessed hinge pin area on the frame. These were left over frames from Mr. Fox’s previous gun manufacturing company. Mr. Fox was criticized for this as it copied the Parker Guns Hallmark feature of the recessed hinge pin. Fox received much ridicule from the sporting press at the time.
