Description:
NSN, .44 cal., 29 3/4" heavy octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore with gain twist rifling. This is a very nice rifle made by the well known New York gunsmith Nelson Lewis who operated a shop in Troy, NY from 1843 into the 1880s. The barrel has an overall smooth plum-brown patina with some mild silvering at the muzzle and along the edges of the flats and a simple maker's marking along the top: “N. LEWIS/TROY/NY". Additionally, the underside of the barrel is drilled and tapped for a flat-base rest but none is currently installed. The breech and back-action lock retain some of the original nickel plating which has flaked to reveal plum-brown metal underneath. The rifle is equipped with a hooded front target sight and a large lollipop rear aperture sight that is adjustable for windage and elevation, although there is a second drilled and tapped hole in the top tang as well. The rifle has double set triggers and retains traces of nickel on the guard while the forend and buttstock have been nicely refinished and exhibit only some very minor handling marks and small blemishes in the added oil finish. Additionally, there are scratches and marks on the pewter forend cap and the hooked target buttplate has an extension to the bottom tine for more purchase. The original false muzzle and bullet starter are still present and included with the rifle (fitting false muzzles was one of the few things Nelson Lewis did not do in-house; he sent all of his barrels to Remington for fitting and installation). This is a great and still shootable New York percussion target rifle by a well known maker and would make a great addition to any collection. {Ref. “The Muzzle-Loading Cap Lock Rifle" by Ned Roberts; 1958} Antique
