Description: Browning Superposed 20 Gauge O/U Shotgun 1949, 1RST YEAR, 28” M/F, BUTTPLATE, 99% General Specs: Browning, Belgium, Year 1949, 20 Gauge, 6lbs 6oz, Over Under Serial Number: 992 The Browning Superposed was the first prominent over/under shotgun introduced to the USA. Beginning in 1931, the Superposed action has been used in the field and at gun clubs for clays with over 80 years of proven, rock-solid performance. Designed by John Browning, these are hand-fitted, quality guns made one at a time by skilled craftsman that are a dying breed in today’s world. Browning contracted Fabrique Nationale (FN) in Belgium to manufacture his over/under and his design was distributed to the USA under the Browning name and throughout Europe under the FN name. The European guns were the exact same guns mechanically, but had different engraving than the USA versions. In 1949 Browning and FN produced and distributed the first Superposed in a 20ga. that was to greatly impact the shooting world. This fine Superposed Field Grade in 20ga., sn992 built in 1949, has hard to find 28” M/F barrels making it a much more desirable gun than a similar gun with Skeet chokes which are so common. Made for the European market, it is engraved in the A1 engraving pattern as shown in Schwing’s book “The Browning Superposed” on page 141. As you compare this gun to others, keep in mind that the most desirable Superposed guns are the long tang, round knob guns built before 1965. This 6lb. 6oz. gun is all factory original and is in amazing condition, retaining 99.5% factory finishes. Even the wood finish is original, and this on a 68 year old gun! Guns built after 1965 were prone to salt contamination and rust because of the manner which Browning cured their wood. The market place has an aversion to the later guns with short tangs, and some even with square knob pistol grips. This is a great upland gun that is balanced to perfection and light enough to carry all day afield. The value of these earlier, three digit serial number Superposed guns continues to climb, so you can invest in this gun and enjoy its use as it gains value. From a collector’s stand point, the European guns are rarely seen here in the states and are highly desirable for their fit and finish as well as this unique engraving pattern that later became the standard for the Browning Superlight Grade 1 engraving. Finding one in mint factory condition is extraordinary. Thanks for looking!
