Description:
Offered for sale is a Merwin Hulbert & Company “Open Top” Frontier Army SA revolver. This revolver has the scoop cylinder flutes and square butt. It’s chambered in caliber .44 MH and has a 7” barrel. The revolver is in excellent condition with 90+ percent of its original finish remaining and excellent bore. The mechanics function as designed in single action, opening and take-down. Factory special order red/orange and black “mottled color” grips in superb excellent condition. Serial number 7186. Rare gun in high condition. Mfg. in the 1870’s

The markings on the left side of the barrel are light but correct with The Hopkins & Allen Manufacturing. Co. Norwich, Conn. U.S.A”. The top of barrel is correctly marked “Merwin Hulbert & Co. New York, U.S.A. Pat. Jan, 24. Apr. 21. Dec. 15. 74. Aug, 3. 75. July 11. 76. Apr. 17. 77. Pats. Mar. 6. 77”.  The left side of the frame below the cylinder has no marks indicating this early large framed revolver was chambered for .44 MH cartridge.

It is estimated that only several thousand of these unique handguns were manufactured. A truly advanced design far ahead of its time and probably better than any other revolver design of the day including the Colt, Remington and Smith & Wesson companies with whom it competed. To operate, the hammer is placed on first click and then the latch in front of the trigger guard is simply slid to the rear so that the entire barrel/cylinder group rotates to the side. It can then be pulled forward to eject the shorter empty brass while leaving the longer loaded rounds in place. Further, by then pressing inward on the spring loaded lever on the left forward side of the frame, the entire barrel and cylinder can be slid off the frame for cleaning. Reloading is simply accomplished by sliding down the loading gate on the right side of the frame and inserting fresh loaded cartridges.

The last picture is Tso-ay, a.k.a. "Peaches", Chief Apache Scout for General Crook during the Geronimo Campaign.
Pictured with his “Merwin Hulbert” with rare mottled grips identical to this gun.
Other notable western figures that used “Merwin Hulbert’s” include: Jesse James, Pat Garrett, Deputy Marshal Bass Reeves, Bob Dalton and Arizona lady bandit Pearl Hart.
