DELUXE Winchester 1885 High Wall Schuetzen Rifle
Antique Model 1885 with Research Form
Here we present a Deluxe antique Winchester 1885 High Wall Schuetzen Rifle, shipped out of the warehouse on November 17, 1887 according to the accompanying Cody Firearms Museum Serial Number Research Request. The form also confirms the barrel length, barrel weight and the single set trigger, and states that it was originally chambered in .32-40 Winchester. The rifle is now chambered for .40-60 WCF, a necked down .45-60 WCF, fantastic for big game. While this could have been performed by the factory, there is no note indicating such.
This rifle features a Swiss style butt plate, a rear leaf sight graduated to 1000 yards, and a selective brass front sight that can be used with either a blade or very fine, hooded post and bead. The top barrel flat is marked “—MANUFACTURED BY THE— /--WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.—". The breech end of the barrel is marked “.40-60 WCF”. The underside of the barrel is marked “3”, which denotes the barrel weight. Patent date is under the lever.
The overall condition is near fine. The metal surfaces bear 80% of original blue finish. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is nicely figured with some handling marks, and is in very good condition. There is a sliver at the front of the fore end. The bore features sharp rifling and is shiny with no pitting. The action is excellent with the standard trigger. The single set trigger needs adjustment.
