Description:

BRITISH Antique BROWN BESS Sea Service Musket

England’s Arm for Napoleonic Wars, War of 1812, and EIC

Here we present an antique Brown Bess Sea Service Flintlock Musket, made in England circa 1795. This pattern was used from the end of the 18th Century through the mid-19th Century. They were issued and put on British Naval vessels to repel boarders, for their own boarding parties, and of course for landing parties. These would have served during the Revolutionary War, Napoleonic Wars, and all over the world in the height of British colonialism.
The cock is of the earlier “swan neck” variety. The inside of the lock is marked “WG” and “Crown/2”. “WG” is the maker’s mark standing for William Grice & Son, makers from about 1760-1790. According to Birmingham Cathedral, “Grice’s firm is best known today for supplying the first British rifles for the British army against the American rebels, as he established the “pattern” for the rifles from a German model, then supplied two hundred of the eight hundred rifles supplied in Birmingham by four gunmakers in all.”
The overall condition is fair. The metal parts have been polished back to white, few of the markings survived. The stock has been repaired and has some other cracks. The stock remains sturdy and does not move. The bore is dark and untouched. The action is strong. Here is a very affordable example of a historically significant British long arm!
