Description:

World War II Japanese Nagoya Type 99 Infantry Rifle

Last Ditch G.I. Bring Back with Mum

Here we present a Japanese Type 99 Bolt Action Rifle, made circa 1944 at the Nagoya arsenal in Japan. The Type 99 Rifle was conceived as an upgrade in chambering from the Type 38 Rifle designed by Nambu. While the 38 utilized the 6.5x50mm cartridge, the 99 was made to handle the larger, more powerful 7.7x58mm. These rifles were simple and very effective. Nearer the end of the war, with the U.S. successfully restricting traffic to the island nation, raw materials and other resources became more and more scarce, leading the arsenals to simplify production and materials even further. These no-nonsense rifles are known to current collectors as “last ditch”.

This example is an example of one of those last ditch rifles. Per the markings on the left side of the receiver, this rifle was made by the Nagoya arsenal, number 175 of the 10th series. There stock is duffel cut under the barrel band, which, when the rifle barreled action was taken out of the stock, allowed the soldier to fit the entire rifle in a duffel or shipping crate for transport back home. The Japanese mum receiver marking is still present, a desirable feature.

The overall condition is very good. The original finish is in good shape, turning plum with age. The markings are clear and legible. Serial numbers match. The stock is in good shape, with normal handling marks. The bore is clean with strong rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a very nice example of a G.I. WWII bring-back!
