Description:
From early photos, it is evident that the Bisley Model was popular among many cowboys and western lawmen.  Quite a number of Bisley’s were also sold into Mexico, and at least one sharp photo clearly shows one in the holster of Francisco “Pancho” Villa, a.k.a. Doroteo Arango.  This model with the lower and wider hammer spur, an alternate grip profile, and offering better trigger control, appealed to many ardent users as their “working gun”.  With a total production run of 44, 350 Bisley’s, this #327119 was among the last manufactured in about 1912.

This Colt has deeply-struck matching serial numbers on frame, trigger guard, and backstrap.  No serial number appears on the cylinder or barrel (not expected in this serial range), but the 4-3/4” barrel has the large front sight as is correct on a very late (post-1910) Bisley.  This taller front sight was the first real evidence of Colt accommodating the faster-burning smokeless powders, with all previous sights shooting about 6 inches high at 25 yards.  The barrel has a distinct two-line address and the “(Bisley Model) 45 Colt” as rolled on the left side.  The gate assembly number 641 also appears on the rear flat of the frame.  The left side of the trigger guard bears the factory inspector “1”, along with the Triangle “VP” indicating “viewed” and “proved” at the factory.  The frame has the Un-circled Rampant Colt, as is proper on a late Bisley.

All major parts of this Colt have been custom engraved with deeply-cut scroll patterns.  The rear of the cylinder and convex edge of ejector housing have been additionally accented with an intertwining rope pattern.  The two-line barrel address has been nicely bordered with a ribbon pattern, plus two five-point stars located at each end.

The backstrap has an interesting treatment that spells out “TEXAS”, with each letter separated by the same five-point stars as mentioned above.  The word “TEXAS” is also attractively bordered with lines and triangles that transition into the scroll engraving above and below.

The engraver’s name is unknown, but on the side of the backstrap, under the left grip, is an engraved inscription “From” and “To” initials, followed by ”86”.  The engraver was obviously highly-skilled and experienced, judging by the quality of the engraving patterns and overall execution.

The gun cocks crisply and locks up with superb tightness, almost as if a new gun.  Both the safety and half cock notches are functional (not broken) and in the correct places, so hammer needs no re-building.  When hammer is drawn back slowly, the cylinder rotates until lock bolt pops into its lock notch.  When placed on half cock, with the gate opened, each chamber clicks to the center of the loading port.  It could not be better timed or lock up much tighter.  (Rest assured that 90% of Colt SAA’s being offered have broken hammer notches, also broken/worn trigger sears, requiring $150+ in repairs and six months waiting for work completion)!!  The hammer knurl and firing pin type are correct for this serial range.

The engraver finished out his work with a gold-plated cylinder, cylinder pin, hammer, trigger, ejector assembly, and screws.  Nickel plating was done on the balance.  The plating is 100% intact.  The high-quality condition of this Bisley prior to engraving is noticeable on the front face of the cylinder.  The engraver did very little polishing there, and left an “anchor pattern” so that the gold plating will not be soon blown away in firing.  The bore condition appears as bright and shiny, with sharp lands and grooves.  The chambers of the cylinder are in likewise very fine condition, with smooth internal surfaces.  The gun now appears to be unfired, with all plating remaining bright and free of stains.

The simulated pearl plastic grips fit perfectly as probably fitted by the engraver.

Notice that the under-side of barrel never got “roughed up” by someone struggling to pull the cylinder pin with a plyers!!  This is truly a nice gun, in every respect.

In some cases, I can ship directly to a C&R licensed individual.  Otherwise, this Colt must be shipped to an FFL dealer.
