Description:
An excellent Burnside 5th Model Carbine chambered in 54 Caliber percussion. Serial number of 10,167 makes this an extremely early 5th model and one of about 43,000 5th Model carbines manufactured. Total production through the 4th Model was about 10,800...1st Model 300 carbines, 2nd Model about 2,000, 3rd Model about 1,500 and 4th Model about 7,000. Since most of the production numbers are estimated we don't have an exact serial number start and stop for each model. However, this is a very early 5th Model carbine. Barrel is 21" with a brilliant bright strong excellent bore. Metal surfaces are blued and case colored. The barrel is blued and marked "CAST STEEL" with a date to the right of this marking...but only "186" is visible. Barrel retains about 90-92% thinning and slightly fading original blue with some older dried grease near the muzzle, a few minor spots of corrosion and a couple of pinpricks of pitting; mostly on the bottom of the barrel. The frame, hammer, finger lever and buttplate are case colored. The frame and hammer retain about 90% coverage on the right side. The left side of the frame has faded to about 30% coverage with scattered slight pinpricks and fine spots of corrosion. The finger lever retains about 80% coverage on the inside of the lever, while the sides of the lever have faded to gray/brown. The breechblock and lever are fire blued and have very strong coverage with scattered light scratches, dings and marks. The saddle ring has some pitting; please see closeup photo. The buttplate also retains strong case...about 85% remains. The buttstock and forend do have numerous light to moderate dings with a crease on the right side of the butt and two gouges on the forend. Left side of the buttstock has two strong and clear cartouches. It would appear that this carbine has seen little use due to the condition of the metal but the wood shows obvious usage and less than perfect storage over the years. It is a superb condition Burnside and should find a home in your collection. ANTIQUE
