Description:
This fine KO-Wakizashi sword and traditional Japanese pipe came in from one of our local collectors on consignment. He is liquidating a portion of his collection for an eminent move.

This is the description of the sword from the current owner:

" This is a Koto period (pre-1599) medium sword which is unsigned on the blade, but has full traditional mountings. The inlaid forged iron Tsuba is signed and features a relief of two fighters. The blade measures 17" and was professionally sharpened and cleaned. It has a fancy temper with minor blemishes to the laminations. The grip has very old wrappings and is adorned with soft metal menuki (figures). Scabard looks original and has a metal tip, but with some modern repairs. The kozuka is a modern replacement and the holder has a piece missing."

Description of the Japanese Kiseru pipe and case:

"This decorative Japanese pipe, tobacco pouch, and pipe case features a Ojimi bead and decorative mount. The pipe is made of plate silver and ebony wood, 8" in length, and is in original and excellent condition. Disassembles for cleaning. Leather tobacco pouch features a menuki-style figure and is filled with very old Japanese paper - most likely used for rolling cigarettes. The case is in great condition and the bamboo checkering is strong."

Kiseru ( kiseru) is a Japanese smoking pipe traditionally used for smoking kizami, a finely shredded tobacco product resembling hair.

Typically the mouth piece and bowl are made from metal, with a tubular shaft of wood or bamboo stretching in between. The bowl is much smaller than that of western-style pipes. Because each kiseru is basically a rod with metal ends, extremely long kiseru could be carried as weapons, especially by the gangster-like kabukimono samurai of Edo period Japan. Many kiseru have been engraved with elaborate details by skilled artisans and were a status symbol for the owner.
