“H. ELWELL” of OH “TYRON” of PA Marked Long Rifle
Very Nice .32 Percussion Used Recently on Squirrels!
Here we present an antique Half Stock .32 Caliber Percussion Rifle. The lock is marked “H. ELWELL/WARRANTED”. This was the work of Henry Elwell of Seneca County, Ohio. The other hardware of the rifle was made by Edward K. Tryon of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The previous owner attributes the build to the mid-19th Century and his letter describing the gun is included. He used this rifle to hunt squirrels and provides his favorite load on the letter.
This .32 caliber rifle is simple and elegant, with a pewter cap on the fore end, and lightly engraved patch box, butt plate, trigger guard, etc. “TRYON” is marked on the inside of the patch box door. The lock is marked by its maker, Henry Elwell, as stated above, and decorated with scroll and game scene. For precision shooting this rifle is equipped with a longer, heavier octagonal barrel and a double set trigger.
Overall condition is very good. Corners on the octagonal barrel are sharp. Markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is smooth. The bore has sharp rifling and is clean. The action is excellent.
