Description:
The Colt "New Service" model line of revolvers were large frame, large caliber, double action revolvers manufactured from 1898 to 1941. It was the largest production revolver Colt ever made until the introduction of the Anaconda .44 Magnum model in 1990. Over the span of the New Service production run Colt made numerous variants for both the military and commercial markets. This example is the Model of 1909 and was adopted into U.S. Army service in 1909. In 1909 the U.S. War Department placed an order for 6000 of these .45 Long Colt revolvers as an interim solution to the needs of the U.S. Army in the Phillipine Islands. The .38 Colt revolvers in service there were found to be insufficient as "man stoppers". The suicidal Muslim Moro warriors there could sometimes soak up multiple .38 caliber rounds and still fight, leading to the urgent request for a more powerful handgun. The Colt Model of 1909 (New Sevice) in .45LC did a much better job of knocking these guys down with the heavy large caliber slug. The revolver was deemed a success and in 1910 and 1911 the U.S. War Department placed additional orders for more, with a grand total of the orders reaching just over 19,500 guns. 350 of these Colts were shipped to Springfield Armory and the rest of them were shipped directly to the Phillipines to the Manilla Ordnance Depot. The serial number range for this model is 30,001 to 49,503. The adoption of the Colt 1911 in .45ACP spelled the end of the Model of 1909 and production ended after just 3 years, 1909 to 1911. This example is serial number 48,315, making it one of the last couple thousand made likely in late 1910 or early 1911. It is a nice original and all-matching "honest" gun. The original factory blue finish shows quite a bit of high-edge/holster wear and some handling marks but is still very attractive overall. The finish on these 1909's was very glossy due to the high degree of polishing that was done at the factory before they were blued, and this pistol still retains a great deal of that beautiful finish as you can see in the pictures. The bore is excellent on this Model of 1909, it's bright and clean with sharp lands and grooves in the rifling. There is no pitting or erosion visible. The cylinder bores are bright and in excellent condition as well. The original smooth Walnut grips are in excellent condition. They have some handling marks on them but are free from cracks or repairs. They are both stamped with the "RAC" inspectors initials on the butt, and they are serial numbered to the gun on the inside. Everything works 100% as it was designed to. The action is "in-time" and locks up tight with zero play in the cylinder at full lock. The action is also very smooth in double or single action modes of operation, and the trigger is excellent with a crisp break. If you have been looking for one of these scarce Colt 1909s that looks like it saw service but was well cared for, this particular example would be a great choice. It would make an excellent addition to any Colt collection and a sound investment.
