Description:
This is a graceful and handsome saber that has much in common with a British 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Officer's Saber. The sword measures 36 5/8" overall with a 32" dramatically curved, single-edged blade without fullers. The blade itself has a darkly mottled gray-brown patina with some light tool marks along the entire length of the edge. The blade has a very short, unmarked ricasso and the hilt has a stirrup type guard, forward shield-shaped langets, a single quillon, and dove pommel. The grip is black horn with a distinct crosshatch pattern carved along the sides, and there is a stable, longitudinal crack along the length of the grip itself. The scabbard has a matching darkly mottled gray-brown patina, with some wear at the tip, and replacement hanger rings. This is a handsome light cavalry or hussar saber, in very good condition, and would make a great addition to a collection.
