Description:
The Pettengill Army Model is one of the rarest revolvers that was purchased by the U.S. Ordnance Department. The final contract was for a total of only 2000 pistols.  They were manufactured by Rogers, Spencer, & Co. in the early 1860's and were issued in small quantities to various calvary units primarily from Michigan, Missouri, and Kentucky.  They were proven to not be very reliable so the quantity issued was very small.  This example is serial number 4448 and as you can see in the pictures, is a very large impressive looking piece.  It was quite a jump forward in design being that it was a percussion pistol that was both double action and had a hidden hammer.  The barrel on this Army Model is 7 1/2 inches long and it is 15 inches long overall.  The original blued finish has been worn off over the last 150 plus years and it has a mottled gray patina on all of the exposed metal parts.  The original matching serial numbered grips are in average condition with the right panel having a missing chip at the rear edge (serial numbered on the inside of both grips).  This Pettengill has all matching serial numbers except for what appears to be a factory error on the trigger guard, which is numbered "4443" rather than "4448".  There are inspector's initials "WW" stamped on both the frame and the barrel, and the top strap and the frame in front of the trigger guard are stamped with patent dates and maker's marks (See pictures).  Pulling the trigger on this unique revolver will turn the cylinder and cycle and drop the hammer like it is supposed to; however when at rest the cylinder turns freely.  This is your chance to get a really hard to find Civil War Pettengill Army revolver that seldom are offered for sale, and seldom seen in collections anywhere.
