BOY’S RIFLE Tiny Antique UNDER HAMMER
Only 27 Inches Long from Muzzle to Heel
Here we present an antique Boy’s Sized Under Hammer Percussion Rifle, made circa 1840. The percussion firing system was relatively short-lived compared to its predecessors, matchlock and flintlock, and its successor, metallic cartridge. During the period of its prevalence, it appears that it was overwhelmingly decided that God intended the hammer to be located on the top of the gun. However, the under hammer was not without its advantages. The hammer being under the gun gave a clean sight picture and the detonating primer had less opportunity to strike one in the eye. Being far scarcer than more conventional designs, the under hammer firearms are quite desirable today, and some consider them an oddity.
In addition to having a scarce configuration, this specimen is sized for a boy, with a barrel length of 14 inches, with an overall length of 27 inches from muzzle to heel of the butt stock. This makes it even scarcerThe stock has a dramatic drop with a crescent butt plate. The metal surfaces are quite weathered, while the walnut stock has been nicely refinished.
