This carbine got its first toehold in the market during the American Civil War as a cavalry carbine. Dr. Edward Maynard was gifted, and while he was known for his practice of dentistry, he was also an inventor as well. After the war, this company was one of the few gun makers who stayed in business to compete against companies like Winchester. The Maynard system remained a single shot, breech loading affair, and this simplicity contributed to its allure. Being so simple made it easy to change barrels, allowing the customer to swap calibers very easily. This specimen has a shorter than average 20-inch barrel. One can really see that the design changed very little after the Civil War. The breech end of the barrel was shortened and an extractor added. The frame was modified from percussion with the removal of the percussion nipple and the addition of a spring-loaded centerfire firing pin and hammer. This was very likely a military contract carbine that was in inventory when the war ended, then modified as such for commercial sale. You will notice the screws where a sling ring bar would be. The top tang is also tapped for a tang sight. The lever has been outfitted with a spring-loaded catch, which was certainly an improvement over the stock system, wherein a small hole in the lever fit over a small sphere. This was quite likely modified when the owner tailor-made his own stock. The butt plate is wood and hand-marked with the initials “EJB”. The left side of the frame of the gun is marked “EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTED/MAY 217, 1851/DEC 6, 1859” next to “1873”. The right side is marked “MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS”. The overall condition is near fine. The original blue finish is about 60% with still visible case colors. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is in very nice shape. The bore is sharp and shiny. The action is excellent. Here is a one of a kind Maynard Carbine that shows fascinating period modifications! Own the original!
