Double Barrel Back Action Locks
Here we present an antique Double Barrel Combination Rifle-Shotgun, made circa 1850 in the United States. Compared to their single barrel brethren, these double barrel long rifles are quite scarce, as well as being diverse. Some have been made in the “Mule Ear” fashion, with two flat hammers mounted on the side of the gun, one for each barrel. Others feature swiveling barrels and one hammer. This one has been made with fixed, superposed barrels, with a hammer and percussion nipple on each side.
This specimen has a .38 caliber bore on top and a 12 gauge bore beneath. The barrels have a nice twist pattern. The locks and hammers are engraved. The top of the barrel bears an obscured maker’s mark. Crescent butt plate, patchbox and cap trap are brass.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The engraving and twist remain strong. The bottom of the shotgun barrel features an old repair. The stock is smooth and has a well-done graft below the wrist. The bores are dark and in good shape. The actions of both locks are strong. Here is a very neat old combination gun that would have been an excellent companion on the frontier!
