Description:
Description:
This gun no.1692 started life as one of a pair of 14b muzzleloaders, ordered by Thomas L Fitzhugh in 1859 from Boss. According to Donald Dallas's book on Boss & Co, Boss converted them to centrefire in 1870. At some point after this the pair were separated and then sometime between 1904 and 1925 this gun was rebarrelled with 26" 16 bore barrels by F Reece of Price Street, Birmingham. The only parts that appear to remain from the original muzzleloader are the trigger guard, heel and toe plates, the lock and trigger plates with some of their component parts. The wood, the Boss bar action and forend obviously date from the 1870's so the gun remains an antique, the serial number on the trigger guard dates from the original gun from 1859. This gun is a very attractive, light weight, and a rare example of this illustrious maker's work and with the modern barrels would make an excellent gun for shooting game or clays. This gun also fits William Harnden Foster’s, book New England Grouse Shooting, description of the perfect grouse gun and would be the same for any upland game. Foster was also the inventor of skeet shooting. The action has beautiful percussion style fences and spring return firing pins with: double triggers; Stanton Patent rebounding bar action locks; Jones Patent rotary double bite underlever and Boss forend fastener. The breech can be opened with the RH hammer at full cock. Engraving style, Best Open Foliate Scroll with Ornate Borders. Gun weights 5lb 14oz and is a joy to carry afield. Trigger pulls measure approximately: Front trigger 3-1/2lbs Rear trigger 3-1/2lb. The replacement steel barrels are 26" in length, chambered for 2 3/4 " (70mm) nitro cartridges, London reproof 2012, and are of brazed 'dovetail' lump construction with soft soldered ribs. Top rib is of the smooth, concave, game type and is engraved 'NEW BARRELS BY F. REECE, PRICE ST, BIRMINGHAM'. Right barrel is bored 0.662 with a constriction of 0.004 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.024. The Left barrel is bored 0.660 with a constriction of 0.016 for Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028. Straight hand grip Stock and Splinter Forend are crafted from highly figured walnut. The stock features a blank silver oval, well defined drop points and is finished with engraved steel heel & toe plates secured with engraved screws. Stock dimensions are 14-1/8” by 1-1/2” by 2-3/8”. Negligible cast off. This is a very rare and desirable gun with a well-documented history and a letter from Boss.
