Description:
Allen started producing the "Pepperbox" design in the 1830's and continued into the 1860's.  They were among the first "self defense" double action pistols that were popular with many Americans including the "'49'ers" headed West to the California gold rush.  The ability to fire 6 aimed shots quickly without having to cock a hammer manually for each shot was a big advantage in a dispute turned gun fight.  Many of these Pepperboxes saw service with soldiers in the Mexican War as well.  The Allen Pepperbox was truly a significant gun in American firearms history.  This example is a 6-shot model in .31 caliber.  It is in very nice original condition, and it is all matching and works flawlessly.  The barrel assembly, hammer, trigger guard, frame, mainspring, and both grips are all numbered "13".  The barrels still retain quite a bit of the original blue finish as you can see in the pictures, and the original Walnut grips look great and are free from cracks or repairs.  It is just a great honest example of this historically important design, and would be an excellent addition to any antique firearms collection.
