Description:
P.C. Topping, MD was born in Lewis County, NY in 1835, but raised in Ohio until 1850 then moving to Wisconsin. Graduated Eclectic University, Cincinnati in 1859. In 1860 he came to Kansas locating near Baxter Springs and was the first physician in that part of the country. Then to Franklin County and in the summer of 1862 enlisted in the 12th Kansas infantry, serving 12 years. The greater part of the last two years was at hopsital steward. After coming out of the army, remained in practice in Franklin County until 1867 when he located in Greenwood County, remaining one year, then to Howard County and took a claim near the present town sight of Howard and was the first physician to locate in that county. This was his physicians box, carrying medicine and tools on the back of a buggy. Used both in Howard and Elk Counties, KS. Visual, collectible and still functional.  Measures 24"x16"x14".
