Here we present an antique Colt Second Model Deringer, made circa 1875 in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1870 Colt’s purchased National Arms Company and began producing a Deringer pistol based on its design. This became Colt’s First Model Deringer and it was Colt’s first single shot pistol. It was followed in quick succession by a very similar pistol, called Colt’s Second Model Deringer. Both of these pistols were chambered for .41 rimfire and featured a barrel that rotated counter-clockwise for loading and unloading. Its purpose was to provide a very small, large bore single shot for carrying concealed in 19th Century America. Whether in a busy Eastern city or a dusty Western boom town, a small, simple and reliable firearm was the order of the day.
This pistol features an iron frame with scroll engraving. The presence of checkered wooden grips was a primary difference between the No.1 and No. 2.
The overall condition is very good. The iron has a dark sheen patina to it. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match. The walnut grips are nicely checkered and in very good condition. The bore and the action are fine.
