Description:
The Mossberg Brownie is a 4 barreled "pepperbox" design with a rotating hammer that was manufactured by the firm from 1920 to 1932. The design was actually one that Mr. Mossberg had patented when he was briefly with the Shattuck Arms Co. which had gone out of business. The patent reverted to Mossberg when the Shattuck firm closed and Mossberg decided to make this pistol as he believed it was a guaranteed seller and would help get his new company off the ground. The gun debuted in 1920 and was marketed as a pocket pistol that trappers could easily carry while checking their trap sets. The gun was a commercial success as a concealed carry pistol and Brownie production exceeded 35,000 guns over a 12 year production run. It remains the first and only handgun the Mossberg company has ever manufactured. This is a nice original example in working order. It retains a good bit of the original blue finish with the remainder a blue/brown patina. The bores are bright and free from pitting. The original grips have shrunk a tad but are free from cracks or repairs. We tested the firing mechanism by pulling the bullets on 4 rounds and cycling the pistol 4 times and the hammer makes nice deep indentions in the brass setting off the primer on all of the rounds. Truly a unique and scarce pocket pistol, this Mossberg Brownie would be a great addition to any gun collection!
