Clement in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1864. Only about 11,000 of these rifles came out of this contract, which was specifically for the state of Massachusetts. The M1861 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the American Civil War. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1861 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel, and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike solid, round ball. This .58 caliber rifle’s lock is dated “186” and marked with an eagle over “U.S.” and “S.N.&W.T.C./FOR/MASSACHUSETTS”. The left side of the barrel has the “V/P/eagle head” proofs, underneath of which are the inspector initials “L.F.R.” Two inspector cartouches are still visible, but faint. Butt plate is marked “US”. There are various non-standard markings on the musket. The first is on the top of the butt plate and is “B/20”. This is likely a unit marking. The markings “25” can be found stamped into the stock on both sides a total of 6 times. Comes with its original bayonet, which is also marked “US”. The overall condition is about fine. The metal surfaces bear a nice even gray patina. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock shows some handling, but is overall smooth and solid. The bore is sharp and clean. The action is excellent. Here is a very desirable and collectible Civil War infantry musket made for the state of Massachusetts! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 40 inches. Caliber: .58 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
