Description:

Nice CIVIL WAR Antique MANHATTAN Navy Revolver

Series III Revolver with Scarce Spring Plate and Good Scene

Here we present an antique Manhattan Navy Series III Revolver, made circa 1863 in Newark, New Jersey. Manhattan Fire Arms Co. was founded in 1856 specifically to capitalize on the soon to be expiring Colt patents in 1857. This strategy worked very well for the company and they began by making high quality and very close copies of both Colts and other popular pistols with expired patents. In fact, Manhattan’s copies of Colts were so close that Colt tried to kill their production with a lawsuit, even though their patent had expired. Quite obviously, this pistol is a direct and quality copy of the Colt 1851 Navy.

Manhattan’s revolvers were very well received by the public. The company never received U.S. military contracts, except for a small delivery, most likely on the regimental level. Nevertheless, many Manhattan revolvers found themselves on smoky Civil War battlefields, purchased privately by officers and soldiers, and they were certainly in use at home. The war created a vast and unquenchable market for firearms of all types.

The five distinct cylinder scenes on this example are quite good. Two of the scenes are of a cavalryman charging into a group of soldiers. Two scenes are of what appears to be civilian men fighting against soldiers with bayonets fixed on their rifles. The last scene is of men rowing a small boat toward a steamer ship.

The overall condition is very good plus. The metal surfaces are dark gray. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match, with the exception of the cylinder, which is still in the Series III range about 1600 numbers away. The walnut grip is very good. The bore is in good condition. The action is excellent. Here is a scarce example of a Series III Manhattan Navy!
