It was manufactured by the Blunt & Sims Company in New York City, New York in the 1840's or '50's. The barrel on this pepperbox are 3.5 inches long and appear to be .31 caliber. It has a ring trigger that operates an underhammer that fires one of the six barrels each time it is pulled. This example still retains some of the original factory blue finish on the barrel cluster. Several of the nipples have damage or have broken off likely from dry-firing it, however the action still functions how it was intended to. The barrels still rotate and lock into place when the ring trigger is pulled, and the underhammer still slams home on the nipple. These pepperboxes were a great design and packed a lot of firepower for that time in a small, concealable package. They were a favorite of gamblers, prostitutes, and the "'49ers" of the gold fields and mines of California. This American made Blunt & Sims Pepperbox belongs in any early American firearm collection as a very historically important evolution in firearms design.
