RARE NY PECARE & SMITH 10-Shot Pepperbox Revolver
With Even RARER IRON Frame! Circa 1850
Here we present an antique Pecare & Smith 10-Shot Pepperbox Revolver, made circa 1850 in New York. Very few examples were made and still fewer exist today. This specimen happens to be a rare variant of an already rare gun in that its frame is made of iron, as opposed to the standard brass. It was made by Jacob Pecare and Josiah Smith of New York, circa 1850. At this time, Ethan Allen’s groundbreaking double action revolving pepperbox design had been around for about 10 years. It was enormously successful with civilians and even some in military. The Pecare & Smith sought to improve upon that success in several ways, aside from providing 10 shots of .28 caliber ball. 1) They internalized the double action hammer, visible through a window at the top of the gun; 2) they provided a shroud around the barrel cluster that was stationary, allowing the cluster to revolve freely within; and 3) they made the trigger a folding one, much like European gun makers had been doing for quite a while.
While the folding trigger was an interesting feature for an American gun, it was the first two improvements listed that are actually most interesting. Each of these is specifically aimed at the defensive use of the revolver. Like the Allen design, this revolver still used the double action pull of the trigger to first rotate the cylinder and cock the hammer, before the hammer descended on the fresh percussion nipple. On the Allen, however, if one’s assailant grabbed the gun they could impede the gun from firing simply by preventing the exposed hammer from cocking or the barrel cluster from going to the fresh chamber. In Pecare & Smith’s design, the hammer and barrel cluster were effectively protected, so even if the weapon was grabbed, the shooter could still fire, and have 10 shots to get their point across.
This specimen is marked “PECARE & SMITH’S/PATENT 1849”. Each bore is numbered at the muzzle of the barrel cluster. The iron frame and barrel shroud are lightly scroll engraved. The barrel cluster underneath is 3-5/8 inches and ribbed. This is a very interesting and rare revolving pepperbox.
This specimen is in good condition. The iron has an overall dark patina with light pitting. The markings are visible. The grips are in good condition and solid. The bores are in good condition. The action is fine.
