Description: Ithaca NID Grade 5E 20 Gauge Side-by-Side SKEET GUN, VENT RIB, RARE, FACTORY ORIGINAL, 1 OF 10 MADE General Specs: Ithaca, Year 1930, 20 Gauge, 7lbs 1oz, SxS Serial Number: 457552 The Ithaca NID (New Ithaca Double) was the last version of side by side shotgun produced by Ithaca between 1926 (the end of the Flues Model) and 1949 when all Ithaca double guns were discontinued. The total production of the Ithaca NID in all gauges and grades was fewer than 45,000 guns. This is a shame as the NID action was, by design, the strongest action of all the big 5 double gun makers, second in strength only to the venerable Model 21 from Winchester. The action had less steel cut out for the working parts, and the rotary bolt was robust and positive. Ithaca Gun Co. gave you more for your money per grade than all the other double gun makers, ie fancier wood figure and checkering patterns, and gorgeous engraving. Fit and finish on the Ithaca NID left nothing to be desired. Walt Snyder wrote the definitive book on Ithaca guns, “Ithaca Gun Company, From the Beginning”, where he notes that the total production for the Ithaca NID Grade 5 guns was 155 guns, most of them being 12ga. When Walt was the keeper of the Ithaca records (Walt retired a year or so ago) he provided a factory letter for another Ithaca NID Grade 5E 20ga. I had noted that there were likely only 15-20 Grade 5E 20ga. guns ever produced…A RARE GUN INDEED. This particular gun, sn457552 produced in 1930, is MORE RARE YET, AS IT IS A SKEET GUN EQUIPPED WITH EVERY OPTION OFFERED BY THE FACTORY, including VENTILATED RIB, ejectors, single selective trigger, beavertail forend, double ivory beads, factory butt pad, and gold stock shield. The 26” barrels have perfect bores and are choked SK/SK. The stock is gorgeous European walnut, the checkering like new with elaborate ribbons and flor-de-lis carvings, with a perfect finish and no cracks or repairs. The beavertail forend has the ebony inlay and the reinforcing screw at the forend tip, again with perfect finish and factory checkering. ALL OF THE METAL FINISHES AND PARTS ARE FACTORY ORIGINAL, WITH 98% BLUE, 75% CASE COLOR, AND 65% CHARCOAL BLUE ON THE TRIGGER GUARD. The barrel flats and breech face still have the factory jeweling. The action is beautifully engraved with a vine and foliate pattern with stippled background shading, a gold inlaid woodcock on the right, a proud eagle on the bottom, and a gold inlaid pheasant on the left. The screws are all excellent and the mechanics are perfect. The best thing about this high-grade Ithaca is that there is just enough honest wear on the gun that you will not feel out of place shooting the gun at clays or upland game. The gun is one of the great finds in American side x side shotguns with extreme rarity, very useful features, spectacular aesthetics, and a mechanically stout gun that can continue to deliver top performance for decades and generations to come. This is the perfect example of an investment quality shotgun that has it all that can be used and enjoyed while increasing in value. This is a rare opportunity. Don’t hesitate or she will be gone.
