Description:
The Colt Detective Special was one of the first short barreled revolvers manufactured with a swing out cylinder. They were designed as personal defense weapons and carry guns for plain clothes polise officers because of their small size. The Detective Special was made from 1927 all the way to 1986, with a short reintroduction of the model between 1993 and 1995. There were 4 distinct "series" recognized by collectors. This example is a "2nd Series" pistol made in 1966. The 2nd series guns had an elongated ejector rod with a groove in the knurling, a smooth cylinder latch, and a serrated trigger spur. It was during the 1960's that Colt shortened the grip frame on these guns to match the Cobra and Agent models, but they kept the grips that same size by extending them under the grip frame. This example is in excellent condition! It retains 98% of the original factory blue finish, with the only deductions coming from a very faint drag line around the cylinder, and some tiny handling marks visible only under very close inspection. The bore is minty and bright in this Colt. The rifling looks sharp and it is free from pitting and erosion. The cylinder bores also are minty and clean. The front of the cylinder and the forcing cone show no wear or evidence of carbon fouling. The factory checkered Walnut grips are in excellent condition. The checkering is still sharp and they are free from wear, cracks, or repairs. Both sides have clean silver Rampant Colt medallions. The action on this Detective Special is smooth and "in-time" in both single and double action modes of operation. The cylinder locks up tight with no wiggle at full lock and the trigger breaks cleanly. This gun functions 100% like the day it left the Colt factory. If you have been looking for a minty "collector grade" 2nd Series Detective Special, this one would be hard to improve upon.
