Description:
Very Fine Civil War Hall-North U.S. Model 1843 Breechloading Side Lever .58 Caliber Percussion Carbine. Approximately 10,500 of these carbines were manufactured between 1844-1853 in .52 cal. Smoothbore. They were originally carried by 1st & 2nd U.S. Dragoons during the Mexican War. In 1861 5,000 of these obsolete carbines were purchased for $3.50 each by a group of investors including Gen. John Fremont & J.P. Morgan. Guns were reworked into .58 cal. rifled cartridge for $1.00 & then sold back to the ordinance department for $22. The transaction would come to be known as the “Hall Carbine Affair”. These reworked rifles were then issued to many cavalry units in Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, as well as the 4th Arkansas, 5th Iowa, 2nd Wisconsin, 1st Indiana & 8th & 9th New York.

Features 21” barrel with good bore. Top of breechblock has visible “U.S./S. NORTH/MIDLTN/CONN./1851 & the right rear breech is marked “JH”. Breechblock has thumb lever right side & extended saddle ring bar on left side. Fixed post & notch sights with iron cleaning rod. The breechblock & hammer are casehardened & remaining metal parts are finished with brown lacquer. Side lever & breech action have perfect timing. One-piece full straight grip stock secured by two barrel bands & iron buttplate. Overall in very good plus condition with metal showing original finish mixed with a pleasing patina, wood is very good only showing a couple minor cracks on the upper grip. A fine example of highly sought after military carbine that will make a nice addition to a Civil War Era collection.
