Description:

Antique COLT Model 1851 NAVY Percussion REVOLVER

Fantastic .36 Caliber Six-Shooter Made in 1866

Here we present an antique Colt Model 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver, made in 1866, the year after the American Civil War, in Hartford, Connecticut. The 1851 Navy was one of Colt’s most famous and successful lines, reaching a production total of 257,348 from 1850 to 1873 (right up to the time of SAA production) from both Hartford and London factories. From Hartford alone, 185,000 were made by the end of the American Civil War. In addition, the Model 1851 was a favorite of “Wild Bill” Hickok, who carried two of these most famously in his red sash.

The cylinder roll engraving on the 1851 Navy features a scene from the Battle of Campeche executed by American engraver Waterman Ormsby. The engraving pays homage to Texas in their fight with the Mexican government for independence. During this particular battle, the Mexican Navy wielded two ironclad steamers, while the Texans were armed with a variety of wooden ships, led by Commodore Edwin Moore. The scene also appears on the cylinders of the Colt 1860 Army and 1861 Navy Revolvers.

The top of the octagonal barrel reads “—ADDRESS COL. SAML. COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA—”. Trigger guard is marked “.36CAL”. The frame is marked “COLTS PATENT”.

The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces have been cleaned and are regaining a patina. The markings are clear and legible. The cylinder scene is faint, but visible. The serial numbers match. The walnut grip shows period wear and are solid. The bore is in good condition with nice rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a fantastic Colt 1851 Navy!
