BRITISH Indian ENGRAVED Antique SxS HOWDAH Pistol
Made for Hunting from Atop Elephants & Defense Against Tigers
Here we present an antique Howdah Pistol, made circa 1880. It features side by side barrels with massive bores, a nice pistol grip with a lanyard ring, and nice engraving. It handles just like a breech-loading shotgun. These were developed during the 19th Century to carry as short-range backup weapons for hunting atop of elephants, the basket of which was known as a “Howdah”. One can imagine trying to wield a short, powerful weapon like this against anything from an attacking tiger to a man, versus handling a rifle from the top of an elephant.
The overall condition is good. The metal parts have a deep plum patina. The engraving is sharp and clear. The wooden stock is very nicely grained with a bit of carving at the bottom. The bores have been cleaned and somewhat rifled. The left firing pin shield is missing a small portion that does not affect function. The action is strong. Here is an interesting and great-looking pistol!
