Fine Hopkins & Allen Model XL .38 Revolver
Double Action Folding Hammer .38 Pocket Revolver Circa 1900
Here we present a Hopkins & Allen Model XL Double Action .38 Revolver, made circa 1900 in Norwich, Connecticut. This 6-shot, .38 Centerfire revolver was made for self-defense in the late 19th Century, and would have been a convenient companion worn in a belt holster. Hopkins & Allen was founded around 1867, acquiring Thomas Bacon’s company, and producing a wide array of revolvers at the close of the 1800s. They are perhaps most famous for manufacturing Merwin & Hulbert’s excellent revolvers.
This example features a unique folding hammer design that it shared with similar Merwin & Hulbert revolver, which Hopkins & Allen made. The top strap is marked “HOPKINS & ALLEN M’F’G CO/PAT.MAR.28.71 JAN.5.86/X.L. DOUBLE ACTION/38 CAL CENTRE FIRE”.
The overall condition is near fine. The original nickel finish is 90%. The markings are clear. The original grips show use, with a chip off the bottom right grip. The bore is in good condition. The action is strong.
