Description:
Mossberg made this "LSA" model of the 144 series from 1960 to 1979.  These 144 Series rifles were Mossberg's full target model .22 rifle.  The firm made sure they were built well, and that they were capable of competing with other target rifles out there that were two and three times more expensive at the range.  We know this one was manufactured prior to 1968 as it has never had a serial number which wasnt required until the Gun Control Act of 1968.  It would be hard to find one of these in better condition than this one.  The original factory blue finish is better than 95%, the bore is perfect and bright, and the stock only has some small handling marks and dings and is free from cracks or repairs.  According to the Blue Book of Gun Values this model should have come with a Mossberg S-130 rear sight, but this example has the later and improved Mossberg S-331 rear sight that came factory on the 144LSB.  All of the sight adjustments for windage and elevation work 100% like the day it left the Mossberg factory floor.  The front sight is the factory correct Lyman 17A with the removable insert.  This rifle also features a quick release lower sling swivel and an adjustable palm swell on the forearm.  The only negatives we can find on this rifle are the factory black plastic trigger guard and tang have shrunk some and created a gap between it and the wood, and the small factory red and green plastic safety position inserts have been replaced with some homemade pieces.  It is quite common for us to get Mossbergs of this vintage with completely broken trigger guards and missing safety position tabs altogether, so this rifle is a LOT better than most.   You can see both of these areas in close up pictures.  This rifle has obviously had a very easy life in storage, and has probably not been shot in several decades at a minimum.  We have gone thru this rifle from one end to the other and everything works 100% like it did when new.  This rifle is a beautiful example of what American gunmakers were turning out in the early 1960's.  The quality of workmanship, construction, and materials used were second to none.  If you have been looking for a cool vintage .22 target rifle that will flat out shoot and certainly be a conversation piece at the range, this is it!
