Description:
WHITNEY-REMINGTON STYLE II ROLLING BLOCK  IN SCARCE AND DESIRABLE .44-40 CALIBER, ONLY MADE 1881 TO 1888, this is the No.1 Sporting rifle of which only about 3,000 were made in all calibers including rim fires, mostly gray/brown receiver with some case color in the most protected areas, 28” barrel has aged to a plum-brown and has a filler in the rear dovetail and a blade front sight matched with a Lyman tang sight with disc, under barrel is marked “44 CAL C F W” (center fire Winchester), bore is mint and I suspect it has been relined as the muzzle has a “ring” that looks more like a slight re-crowning around the bore and yet I can see no liner ring at the breech end, exc. wood shows normal light handling only, forend retains the ebony inlay schnabel tip, barrel serial number under the forend matches the receiver number
