Description: NSN, .44 Caliber, 30 11/16" heavy octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has a few tiny hints of freckling within the grooves. This is a handsome rifle, built by William Billinghurst of Rochester, NY, that has a heavy, target-weight barrel, and Billinghurst's characteristic mule-ear percussion lock. The metal surfaces are mostly a mottled brown with areas of gray visible underneath. The top of the barrel is marked "W. BILLINGHURST", the underside is marked “W.H.SMITH" beneath the forend (a Rochester maker who worked for Billinghurst), and the lock plate and hammer have foliate border designs. The lock springs are still robust, and the mechanism functions correctly. The walnut stock rates about very good and has a few light dings and other handling marks scattered about the added oil finish. The right side has a sliver missing from the leading edge of the lockplate forward to the pewter forend tip cap. The barrel wedge is a later replacement, and is a bit too long. The stock also features a simple brass trigger guard and crescent buttplate that both have a mild yellow-ochre patina. The rifle is equipped with a globe style front sight with insert, and has a lollipop style aperture sight mounted to the tang. Included is a period wood ramrod that may be original. This is a hefty half stock Billinghurst plains rifle in very good overall condition.
