Description:
#0957 Winchester NWMP issued 1876 Carbine, 45/75WCF with very good bore (being at least an 7 on a scale of 10 and should clean better). Fine smooth action. Serial #44XXX which dates this rarely encountered NorthWest Mounted Police (later to become the Royal Canadian Mounted Police)carbine to 1885. In 1884, Louis Riel, a French political leader, was called upon by the Métis leaders in Saskatchewan to articulate their grievances to the Canadian government. Instead he organized a military resistance that escalated into a military confrontation, the North-West Riel Rebellion of 1885. Ottawa used their new rail lines to send in thousands of combat soldiers, many armed with Winchester 1876 carbines. This particular carbine was one of 400 shipped in order #19819 on April 3, 1885 and almost certain to have been involved in the suppression of that Rebellion. It is an impressive and very scarce carbine and is far, FAR above average condition and has liberal thinning and plumming blue mixing with smooth brown patina (approximately 60-70% coverage of 30-70% density depending on which side you’re looking at; the right side has less blue and more mottled staining). The edges are sharp, no pitting, fine markings, and very decent wood with no appreciable damage aside of the two spots shown in the photos, one of which unfortunately looks to have been the deliberate removal of the NWMP cartouche. It has the standard NWMP military long range rear barrel sight and military post front sight. Overall a very, very fine carbine with a very decent bore, a great Canadian history, and it will be pretty danged tough to find a better one at anywhere near this price. About Ex.Fine. $9895.
