Description:
This rifle is truly the epitome of the ultimate American classic sporting rifle.  This custom rifle was built by R.F. Sedgley in the late 20's or early 1930's.  The Sedgley company was located in Philadelphia, Pa. and built high quality sporting rifles primarily off of Springfield 1903 receivers.  Mr. R.F. Sedgley built the business by buying from Springfield any 1903 Model receivers or rifles that were determined to be improperly heat treated for a low price, re-heat treating them to proper specs, and then building them into first class sporting rifles.  As his company became more well-known he started getting rifles shipped to him from all over the country for custom work and the company took off.  This particular rifle is a great example of the basic Sporter that he offered.  It was built using a Springfield 1903 receiver and a Winchester-sourced heavy target/varmint profile 30-06 caliber barrel that is 24 inches long.  It was assembled together along with a National Match Springfield trigger, a Lyman 48 receiver sight, a banded ramp style front sight with a sight hood, and a nice straight grained American Walnut stock without a cheekpiece.  All the metal parts were treated to a high gloss blue finish and the rifle was test fired to make sure it would shoot well.  As you can see in the pictures this rifle retains a lot of the original blue finish, but it has been carried, shot, and hunted with.  It shows finish wear in all the areas you would expect to see it, but the rifle's overall appearance is still very nice and honest.  It also has never been drilled and tapped for optics which is quite rare.  The bore is what most would consider average.  The lands and grooves of the rifling are still strong but it has a frosted appearance rather than being shiny.  While the original checkered American Walnut stock is in good condition overall, there are two hairline cracks that run back into the checkering from the rear of the trigger guard.  They are only visible under very close examination, and we can't get them to open up any by putting torque on them.  This means that they are mainly superficial or already repaired and will not have any effect on the rifle's performance.  The fine-line checkering around the pistol grip and on the forearm is attractive and still provides nice purchase.  The stock also features an original Winchester-sourced checkered metal buttplate that was expertly fit by Sedgley, and sling swivels with the front swivel attached to a barrel band that runs thru the wood to help hold the rifle tight to the stock.  Everything on this rifle works 100% like it did when it left Sedgley's factory.  The action is smooth and the trigger is phenomenal.  If you have been looking for a vintage American sporter for your collection that exemplifies class and quality, this rifle is it!  REDUCED from $1150 to $995!!!
